How To Deal With Problem Players

While Acrophobia was in beta, thousands of people downloaded and played at least one game of Acrophobia. The overall number of players and games greatly exceeded our expectations! Unfortunately, with a community this large (and growing), there will inevitably be some troublemakers. And while this group is in the minority, it's an annoying minority nontheless. This edition of the A Files suggests a five-step process when dealing with "Silly, No-good, Annoying Gamers," or "SNAGS" as I like to call them.

  1. THE ROOM SETTINGS ARE MEANT AS MORE THAN A LANGUAGE FILTER...
...they are meant as a behavior guide. "Keep It Clean" means more than defeating our language filter by using hyphens or underscores or whatever. It means that each user should take responsibility for their actions and sincerely "Keep It Clean." If someone forgets this, the first thing you should do is gently remind them.

  2. NEVER LET THEM SEE YOU SWEAT
SNAGS enter games with one goal in mind: to make sure you don't have fun. SNAGS enjoy seeing you get mad, so don't show your anger. If they flame you, don't flame them back. If they use the "aa bb cc" cheat to get speed points, remember that those points rarely lead to victory. If they personally insult you, see suggestion three.

  3. MAKE LIBERAL USE OF THE /IGNORE FEATURE
The /ignore feature is highly underused, and can solve many SNAG problems. If you see someone being annoying…/ignore them! For extra style, mention to the other players that if they are annoyed by someone (don't name names), they can effectively use the /ignore feature. Tell them how to use it, or direct them to Hints and Tips.

  4. THE ONLY GOOD SNAG IS A BORED SNAG
Remember, SNAGS need attention to survive. So, if you don’t give them any, they’ll go away. Lastly, if all else fails...

  5. WE'LL BAN THE SNAG!!
If someone is being an incredible pain in the browser, use the /log command, and tell other people in the room to do the same. Log a few minutes of the garbage and send it to us, along with a description of what happened, when it happened, and who was involved. We must receive a log from many users covering the same incident before we will act upon the request. To protect you, the user, we will not ban someone unless the incident in question is extreme, or unless the SNAG has caused trouble many times.
